You must be 18 years of age or older. Strong attitude of teamwork, mutual respect and willingness to learn. Active members will, in general, reside within the active response boundaries of RCVFD. However, exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. The Operations Officers must unanimously approve exceptions to this requirement.

What is the first step to volunteering?

Do volunteer firefighters get paid?

RCVFD firefighters do not normally get paid. With prior approval responders may get reimbursement for additional training. In very rare cases of extended deployment or regional fire work responders may get reimbursed for some time and expenses.

Should I start physical training before applying to volunteer?

Physical fitness is a primary foundation of being a volunteer firefighter. RCVFD does not administer specific physical fitness tests. RCVFD does require all responders to be aware of and consider their own physical condition and to limit their activities with respect to their physical condition. RCVFD recommends regular (annual) physical checkup by personal physician. The physician should be aware of the RCVFD-related activities. The responder may choose to make use of the physical exam checklist provided by NFPA. Participation in a regular exercise/fitness program is highly recommended.

Can a volunteer position lead to a career in firefighting?

Yes. Volunteering is one of the best ways to get the necessary training and experience to be an attractive candidate for a career firefighting position.

Can I become a volunteer EMT with RCVFD?

How many hours would be required?

RCVFD requires responders to attend at least 50% of all trainings, and respond to at least 50% of all calls. Additionally responders must attend a yearly wildland red card recertification, yearly structure fire/equipment recertification and periodic Red Cross CPR certification/renewal.
