Mini pig on the run

Our mini pig escaped from our barn yesterday morning. He is the size of a potbelly pig, about 150 pounds, and all white. He follows people for food like dog food or grain or even cereal like cheerios in case he is near a fenced area or garage, where he could be coaxed in.

Our address is 21520 Buckhorn Rd. Please call Kathy if you see him.

Thank you!

Living Out Loud re-broadcast

On Tuesday, January 5th at 7 pm Living Out Loud, a public affairs show on KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins, will broadcast an encore show about the Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department and our many-faceted team. Our very own Juana Jackson will be featured on this program, interviewed by the host of Living Out Loud, Marjo Sullivan. Tune in and hear first-hand what it was like to be in the midst of one of our worst fire fighting seasons. Many of our “hometowns” were impacted, and Mother Nature and the weather often determined what could and couldn’t be saved.

Tune in... you’ll be happy, proud and grateful you did. You can also live-stream this broadcast from the KRFC website, but only at 7 pm Colorado time.

Cold Weather and Chicken Coops

We have had a couple of calls lately that featured heat lamps in chicken coops. No one wants to see our livestock suffer during the winter months, but consider carefully how to warm your outbuildings, as well as if you should at all. The following article may help.

Action Required: Suppression Repair Info

Larimer County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has information on the county's website regarding suppression repair efforts: specifically repair of dozer and hand lines. In order for the team to conduct suppression repair on private land, they must have an agreement signed by the property owner. This can be done electronically at https://www.larimer.org/wildfire-resources, under the Wildfire Suppression Repair tab. The list of addresses is on this site for areas needing suppression repair.

OEM needs community members to sign the agreement for suppression repair work by the end of the day Wednesday 11/11. From Wednesday, OEM will have seven days to do all the work that can be completed. After 11/18, the team will no longer be able to do suppression repairs.

Sorry for the late notice, but we only received word from Larimer County this evening, and we got this out to the community as quickly as we could.

Sincerely,
Jeff Elsner, Chief
Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department

Lost backpack on 44H

My backpack full of winter clothes fell out of RCVFD engine 613 on our way down the Buckhorn from winterizing cabins today 10/24. If anyone finds it, please contact me at danbob88@gmail or 970-672-4342.

It's a yellow and black Overboard brand drybag (rafting type) backpack, and besides my warm clothes my Kestral pocket fire weather station is in it.

Thanks!

Cameron Peak evac update

The Cameron Peak Fire was active overnight, moving south of Comanche Reservoir and Hourglass Reservoir. This triggered mandatory evacuations for all residents in the Pingree Park, Monument Gulch, and Buckhorn Canyon (CR-44H) areas all the way down to CR-27 (Stove Prairie Rd).

Nov 7th Annual Meeting

The RCVFD Board requests and welcomes comments/suggestions from the community regarding the Annual Meeting scheduled for 6 pm Saturday, Nov. 7. The Annual Meeting -- which is required by the RCVFD bylaws -- has traditionally been held at Stove Prairie School. Due to COVID-19, however, that facility would not allow for social distancing as directed by CDC guidelines. The question is: should the Annual Meeting be held virtually (via Zoom) or should the Board find suitable accommodations (for example, the American Legion building, in Laporte) to allow for an in-person meeting with masks and social distancing. At your earliest opportunity, please email your preference to RCVFD Board President Jeff Yarberry at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Thank you.
