Book Volunteers Needed

We are meeting at station 1 at 7:00 on Tuesday, 8/8, to move books from the conex to the fire station. The book bees need help getting the boxes into the station to sort for the festival. If you can come help for an hour, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, on Thursday morning 9/7, we could also use help moving the books from storage behind station 1 to the book tent. There is a sign up genius to help with scheduling volunteers.

Please help where you can.
Thank you,
Carolyn Stanley

The following message is from the US Forest Service:

Firefighters conducted a test fire in the Magic Feather Prescribed Burn area on 24 July and determined that conditions were clear to allow the prescribed burn to begin as planned. Smoke has been visible in the area, including along County Road 74E (Red Feather Lakes Road).

The prescribed burn is in the vicinity of Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. Closures are in place covering Mount Margaret, Lady Moon, Granite Ridge, and Molly Moon trails as well as the surrounding area specified in the closure order (pdf). People in the area should expect to see smoke when operations are taking place. Smoke may also impact those using the Dowdy Lake Campgrounds and Day-Use Area.

Burning of the Magic Feather Prescribed Burn has been taking place over recent years as conditions have allowed. In May 2023, 200 acres were successfully burned, all north of County Road 74E. This prescribed burn is part of the overall strategy on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests to address the Wildfire Crisis. Prescribed fire is one of the most efficient ways of reducing wildfire risk. Regularly conducting prescribed fires, which mimic nature, reduces the buildup of flammable vegetation and overgrowth.

Swing Station Fundraiser

The Swing Station is throwing Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department a fundraiser on Saturday, June 17 at 2 pm! There will be two bands playing over the course of the afternoon and the Umami food truck will be there serving Asian-fusion food. Umami has been at our annual Mountain Festival before and been a big hit, so we're pretty excited that they'll be there for this one, too.

The door charge will be $20, 50% of which will go toward the department, and we'll have the donation boots out. Please come if you can make it, and bring your friends and family!

Calling 911 via VOIP

This information is only relevant if you use voice over internet protocol (VOIP) for your only phone service. On a recent fire call, RCVFD learned that not all VOIP phones can connect directly with local 911. We have talked with local experts at LETA 911 and were told that not all carriers offer 911 services. Also, some that do offer 911 service sometimes route those calls through a national call center.

So there are a couple of things we want to let you know about to make sure that you can get help when you need it.
  1. Check with your carrier and ask if they provide 911 service & if they do, where are those calls routed.
  2. You can test 911, but it is important that you stay on the line and let the dispatcher know it is a test. Do not hang up or they will perceive it as an emergency & call us out.
  3. You can reach Larimer County Dispatch on their non-emergency number. You should program this number into your phone: (970) 416-1985. This number is how our neighbor was able to activate the emergency system when he realized 911 was not working on his VOIP phone.
  4. Register with LETA 911 - they are critical in getting information out to our community in the event of an emergency when WE want to contact YOU.

As always, feel free to reach out if you have questions.
